January Wrap-Up

Here are my January #mileawhile milestones ... Miles Walked on Purpose: 26.5 High/Low Temps for Walks: 55 degrees/-2 degrees Longest Walk: 2.6 miles Coolest Walking Spot: Beaver Creek, Colorado (I was on foot while my family was on skis). The walking paths were awesome and the views even more so. Insights & Observations: January was about getting out there. Except for our time in Colorado and a couple of glorious days in the mid-40s, it was cold . And yet, not one of my walks was miserable. I forgot how invigorating winter air can be. I looked for opportunities to walk and found them. On two occasions, I walked to meet friends with whom I had breakfast plans. One evening, my husband drove to our son's hockey game, and I walked there. I walked for a few errands as well: post office, grocery store, and library book return. These spots are close for me, but I don't usually choose to walk. Hopefully, such choices will become habits.

February Wrap-Up

Here are my February #mileawhile milestones ... Miles Walked on Purpose in February: 33.8 Total Miles Walked by End of February: 60.4 High/Low Temps for Walks: 60/13 degrees, lots of days in the 30s (didn't track fastidiously) Longest Walk: 3.4 miles Coolest Walking Spot: I've lived in my town for seven years and never walked through the middle of the Elmhurst College campus (which is very close to my house) so that's something. Insights & Observations: January was about getting out there, and February was about keeping it going and challenging myself to some longer walks. One thing that worked really well for me was walking on purpose for a purpose . For example, twice I had money I needed to drop off to others (one envelope for a coach thank you gift, one for some raffle tickets). I walked to deliver the money. I wasn't tempted to quit early when I had a specific destination and purpose. With temperatures hitting 60 degrees a c

2018 Challenge: 500 Miles!

I'm big on New Year's resolutions but have found that I find the most success when I focus on one specific goal. A longish and vague list about eating better, exercising more, spending more wisely, and getting the house under control usually keeps me right where I was before, only with an extra side of guilt. In 2015, I resolved to stay out of Target for an entire year and ... I did it. It didn't change my life, but it was a feeling of accomplishment. I decided that in 2018, I wanted another specific, measurable goal, but wanted that goal to be about doing something as opposed to not doing something. I told my family that I was going to hike 200 miles in 2018 and, well, no one was impressed. I went back to the drawing board and decided to think a little bigger. 500 miles in 2018. My Guidelines: - 500 miles of walks that I take on purpose. - I'm not counting my daily steps as most days I regularly exceed 10,000 steps per day. However, if during the d
